My third cousin Joanne F. Weil died during the 911 attacks at the World Trade Center. I never knew her but I met with her mother Judy Weil on an unrelated errand having to do with Mishkan Israel Cemetery some years back (when? 2012?). She insisted that we meet her at her country club somewhere in Connecticut. My husband Dennis and my cousin Mary Ann were with me when we had lunch. I knew that her only child Joanne had died during the attacks. My experience with friends who had children who passed away is that they like to have them acknowledged. They fear that their child will be forgotten if people are afraid to ever mention them. This did not work with this mother. I asked her to tell me about Joanne and she would not.
Isn't that the whole deal with 911? When it happened, for a day or so, we all saw those planes hit those buildings again and again. And then, nothing, the images were not shone again. It's like we have to teach our children now about the event because they never see images. Haven't all of us thought what it might have been like if we were in those buildings at that moment?
I've been adding information about Joanne Weil to add to my family genealogy. So people know. She was a corporate securities attorney in one of the towers. At the end of the ABA journal in an article talking about the people lost at Harris Beach, are some further resources. Include a simulation done by some Purdue researchers of the damage sustained by the building as the airplanes hit. Not for the feint of heart. The lower image is from that simulation.
