2013 - A view from Birmingham

I was going through some old mail and found this picture went in a 2017 post from Megan of a picture taken in 2013 in Birmingham.  Shortly before she moved back to Seattle.  They're eating popsicles but they are not from Seattle Pops.  They're from Steel City Pops, a small chain that Megan discovered in Birmingham.  They certainly gave her the idea for her own business.  I had heard that they grew very quickly and then hit hard times.  But their website implies that they still have seven locations.  This might have been our first trip to Birmingham.

Wait, wait, you're wondering, what the heck are any of us doing in Birmingham AL?

Because Susanna was going to Occupational Therapy School at University of Alabama, Birmingham.  She wanted to be a Occupational Therapist and it's tough to get in.  She didn't have to deal with that directly in undergrad as she was admitted under athletic recruiting.  She didn't know about selective schools.  Especially when they use GRE scores.  She applied to many schools and that's where she got in.  So, it's Birmingham Alabama.  She did it and became a license OT.

Megan went with her for the first few months.  We went to visit and we took a group of her friends out to a Mexican restaurant.  Megan said, you have to see this popsicle store that was right next to the restaurant.  Yup, Steel City Pop's first store.  She really liked what she saw.

She started Seattle Pops in 2014 and it's been going ever since.  In fact, I spent much of the middle of the day with Susanna selling popsicles down at Lake Forest Park mall.  I was there just to keep her company.  Definitely a fall day but she did a steady business.
