On my recent trip to New Haven, Mary Ann and I had lunch with Brendan Zunder. He claims that he is the last surviving Zunder. He may indeed be correct. Of the four brothers that I know immigrated in the 1840s, Maier, Seligman, Samuel, Louis, only Maier had sons, Theodore, Albert, Reginald. Albert had no issue, Reginald had now sons, only duaghters, Theodore had one son Theodore Jr. Brendan is the son Theodore Jr. So, assuming the name gets past down the paternal line, he's the last one. His mother was Rose Fizgerald Zunder and, as you might expect, he was raised as (and continues to be a Catholic.
It took me a fair amount of work to find him. Mary Ann wasn't sure that he was still around. But we did have lunch with him. Check out the three of us. Keep in mind that I'm 5'2". Height is not big in my genetic relatives. My female relatives on both my mother and father's side, well, if they say they're five feet tall, they're lying.
You wonder what Maier would think of his descendants. Brendan is one generation up from Mary Ann and myself. What will we think of our own descendants 113 years after our own death. Surely we will not be able to see them. Brendan is the Maier's son Theodore's grandchild. Mary Ann and I are Maier's daughter Delia's great granddaughters.
Really small Thanksgiving tomorrow. Only five of us. Doesn't seem right somehow. But Ilana's in Indiana; Susanna's in Alabama. Many of the older relatives I used to have have passed. We;ll have Naomi, Danny, Jessica. When we did have 19, 12 of them were college students or young adults and I knew that it wouldn't last.
It will be fine. This morning, Naomi and I picked up the turkey (19 pounds) and other items. Teddys downstairs bed, got soaked in the recent 'incident'. It's drying out but I'm going to toss it in the trash. It really was destroyed already. Bought him a new one at the local locally owned shop.
