Photoessay #1995 - The War in the East

I've been reading more of those 1878 papers.  Pretty soon, I start recognizing the events especially since I have not been reading them in order.  I know that the darn pope is going to die.  Lots of shipwrecks and suicides.  Political scandals; President Hayes had a pretty tough time holding onto his job.  Quite a bit of concern regarding communist and socialist organizing in the US.  And Canada preparing for a predicted invasion by Fenian (independent Irish) forces.  In New Haven, mad dogs caused problems, in fact, citizens were encouraged to shoot dogs in general, bring the dead dog in and you would receive a dollar.  Several high level trials that I haven't bothered to try to figure out.  Huge matrimonial cult.  If you were an adult, you focused on marrying, that's all you could do, not many other options available.

I'm looking for Maier Zunder, the New Haven Board of Education and the devotional exercise controversy.  Not much happened during the summer.  Those with bucks went to resorts in the mountains to take the waters.

And always, "The War in the East" located in Turkey, Russia, Afghanistan, India or somewhere.  Frequent dispatches from faraway places about imagined brutality from unfamiliar exotic peoples.

Isn't there always a "war in the east".  Real like now, in fact even in the same neighborhood.  Even now, I only have a vague idea about what could be happening.  And even if it's not a real war, we always have some 'war in the east' going on in our life.  Struggles and confrontation just out of our reach and control.

Picture from some military history site, now I don't remember which but the Royal Artillery is fleeing.
