Photoessay #1996 - A Negro Song
I'm just about done reading those New Haven newspapers.
I can't help be stunned by the overt racism. When you see the kinds of things that this northern paper thought was appropriate in the 1870s, you will never complain about political correctness again.
Many of the papers included poetry every day.
Here's the first stanza and chorus for some poetry published on Oct 11 1877. It was attributed to the Central Georia Weekly.
A Negro Song
Now de rain am come at last,
An' de long drout time is past,
An' de grass am coming fast
'In de shower;
An' de mornin'-glory brier,
An; de pusley's growin' higher
Eb'ry hour
Chorus:
On, darkies, mind dis warnin';
You won't hab long to pray,
For dem glories in the mornin'
Brings trouble all de day
and so on
You can just imagine the shuffling and whistling.
Be glad for your time.
