Photoessay #1284 - Number 1 team

I still follow Pac 10 softball, still root for the Oregon Ducks (who are having a decent season). But the Washington Huskies are right here in my own backyard and I admit to being a Husky softball fan. Except when they play the Oregon Ducks.

So on a day when not much is going on and the Huskys are playing at home against ASU, ranked #1 in the country. And it doesn't look like it's going to rain THAT much. Low 50s, little bit breezy. What the heck, why not go watch? I don't even bother trying to get somebody to go with me, I just go. About 10 miles away.

Opening day of boating season plus a track meet yet parking amazingly easy. Watch the end of the game that was suspended from last night and the full scheduled game. Washington Huskys lose both. Arizona State played flawlessly, made every play in the field especially some great outfield catches. Every throw on the money. Their freshman pitcher Dallas Escobedo looks like the real thing. The Washington team made mistakes, overthrow here, passed ball there. In a Pac 10 game especially the top ranked ASU team, you cannot make any mistakes.

The game was sold out; I bought Standing Room Only, though I admit to sitting in the outfield bleachers. Picture taken from the outfield is the last play of the game, the Huskys try to get something going. Victoria Hayward taking off from first as Jenna Clifton launches the ball into left field with two outs. But the ASU fielder caught the ball to end the game. Everybody watching the ball including the ASU pitcher. The fans wearing what softball fans in Seattle usually wear in May, parkas, hoods, hats.
