Photoessay #910 - Eat Locally

Some residents whose son has an organic farm in the Skagit Valley have set up a small stand next to their driveway. They help their son out by selling some of his products. Late it the summer, they featured organic corn, we ate a lot of it, so tasty. Now, in the winter, they have potatoes(spuds), squash and eggs. That big thing that looked like a green pumpkin that I used a week or so ago? Turns out it's a some kind of squash.

Listen up, I figured it out. It's not a butternut squash, those are the light colored bell shaped squashes, I have one of those too. It's a butterCUP squash. According to the internet so it must be true.

The most difficult part of dealing with the squashes is cutting them up. See how they have a squash cut in half on the table? Smart marketing. I can't cut up those suckers. I suggested that Dennis take a hatchet to it. He scoffed at me, instead he used the garden saw. Works great. Put it in the microwave for about 18 minutes, add butter and brown sugar, pretty yummy. And it's good for you. I think. I hope.

Haven't tried the eggs yet. Remember how I always fell for the story from the jam lady about the organic eggs from the free range chickens in the apple orchard. And she's show me their pictures and tell me their names. Fell for it every time, bought eggs for $5/dozen. They were good eggs.

This operation is low tech. Usually nobody's out there. You can put your money in the big wood box with the slot at the top.

Gave my gift giving program at Seattle last night. Good turnout, 47. Not too much discussion. Curtis says 'either you've already heard it or you sit in stunned silence'.
