2024 trip - Amtrak

And we're back!

We just returned from our east coast trip.  We went everywhere and did everything.  Total days:11.  The general goal was to attend the Lederer Cousin Gathering in New Brunswick, New Jersey and, since we there see a bunch of other relatives.  My sister Pam was with us most of the time.

The first 4 days were spent taking the train from Seattle to Philadelphia.  Generally positive reviews.  We took the Empire Builder line to Chicago, then the Capital Limited to Pittsburgh and the Pennsylvanian to Philadelphia.  I had been watching the train schedules for weeks noting that we would likely miss the connection in Chicago most of the time.  But we didn't.

Here's Dennis during a break in Shelby Montana/  Generally you didn't get off the train during a stop but occasionally they said the passengers could get off and walk and get some fresh air.

We navigated the Roomette sleeping arrangements which are NOT easy.  It kind of felt like camping.

Some good things:

The food on the Empire Builder, nicely done and convivial
The scenery through the High Line and in Pennsylvania
Seeing the whole darn country
The magnificent train station in Chicago; Philadelphia pretty impressive.  Construction everywhere

Not so great:

The shower situation on the Roomette cars
The food on the Capitol Limited, c'mon did you need all that packaging?
The 4 am connection in Pittsburgh waiting for the Pennsylvanian, no services at the terminal

Plus the general bouncing around.

But we made it.  Amtrak is not robust enough to sustain convenient connections.  Better if you take one train.

We would take the train again.
