How about some more event planning? We live for that, right? Event planning.
Picture from 1970, Priscilla Parkin, my high school classmate, and me. We're seniors in high school and we're both going to UCSC. My father, actually took the day off and took Priscilla and I to visit the campus.
High hopes from me.
Priscilla was brilliant and eccentric but she got along fine at Crown College. But she was reckless and died near the beginning of winter quarter of 1971 from a spelunking accident.
I sort of knew about a Priscilla Parkin scholarship or award or something. For years when the college asked me for money, I said it should go to the Priscilla Parkin fund, They didn't what I was talking about. And then they did.
It turned into the Priscilla Parkin Memorial Fund. The award goes to a "Crown College graduating senior who has had meritorious achievement in the exact sciences." About 10 years ago, I realized that nobody NOBODY at Crown knew who Priscilla was so I wrote up a little piece they could give to the awardees.
But now I wanted to do more. But what? I knew they wouldn't let me give the award. Maybe I could take the awardee and their family to lunch. Find out more about them. Tell them about Priscilla. They haven't given the award for a few years (COVID) but this year they're giving it to 3 students. Taking 3 families to lunch at Commencement seemed kind of daunting. Then I thought maybe I could have a little reception up at Crown. The food service people do this all the time. I could pay for it (Sponsored by the Friends of Priscilla Parkin)
So, I started to correspond with Crown College Provost. He wanted to know about Priscilla, I told him and how well she had done at Crown. I pitched a small reception. He liked the idea, thought we should do it at Alumni Weekend in April. Crown would pick up the expenses. Whoo hoo..
Looks like we are going to be on the schedule for next year. Oh yeah.
This year, I hope to at least do a zoom call with the recipients.
