Recently after we read a book about regional immigrant foods, Ilana and I mused about the dishes that our mothers or grandmothers had prepared that made an impression. It's a little hard when we are so close to the actual dishes. Ilana remembered the stir fry and the pineapple upside down cake that I made. I remember a cake my grandmother used to make when she visited. She was from back east and didn't come very often. The first thing she would, according to my mother do would be to stick a popnoodle into the oven, kind of a quick cake with cinnamon, raisins and walnuts. My mother gave me the recipe; I had tried it some years ago and it didn't come out very well. This time was better but I would like it to rise a bit more.
Tasty though.
I called my cousin Mary Ann to talk about the recipe. She didn't remember a popnoodle at all. And she spent way more time with our grandmother than I did. Couldn't remember the name or a description.
I don't know quite what to make of that but we are both older.
