John Lewis' last ride over the Pettus Bridge
As part of the memorial observances, Rep. John Lewis went over the Edmond Pettus bridge in Selma one more time. The casket is in the back of the cart. Beautiful horses. This bridge was famous when the civil right marchers marched to Montgomery from Selma. Heavily armed police and sheriffs waited for them on the other side of the bridge. The marchers knelt and they were badly beaten. John Lewis, a young activist had a cracked skull.
We had the opportunity to hear Rep. John Lewis speak at UW some years ago. And we've walked across the Pettus Bridge in Selma as part of the Civil Rights trip we took with Temple Beth Am a few summers ago. There was something about it, about doing it that was touching and meaningful. Walking across that bridge in that small town you could imagine the armed police in front of you.
God speed John Lewis, may there be many more of you.
