Dennis and I went with Dennis' family to a program at the Des Moines library about Military Road, part of a road building project by the army between forts in the mid nineteenth century. Lots of cool shots of landscapes and nineteenth century military man who would go on to successful careers on both sides in the civil war. But the talk could have used a little more organization.
I liked it anyway. Mainly because I didn't know anything about it. They were called corduroy roads as they were built by lashing split cedar logs together. Plenty of trees around here.
Grandma Anne, Dennis' brothers Bryan and Dave with his wife Loreen and daughter Krystal who looked very pregnant (just six weeks to go). Afterwards, everybody wanted to go to Wally's, a fish and chips place in Des Moines. We go. I don't think I want to move that far south (too far from the university) but Des Moines does have a cute waterfront and city center.
The section of Military Road between Fort Steilacoom and Fort Bellingham still is used in South King County with the same name.
Picture of the military road up in Skagit County. Date of picture unknown.
