Photoessay #2790 - New football stadium

A picture of the completely rebuilt University of Washington Husky Stadium.  The one I don't work in.  I did work as football event staff for two seasons. I had the end section on the now dynamited and then rebuilt South Stand.  The one without the W in the picture

About half of the people who heard my job said "Wow, how cool!  How'd you get THAT job?" and half (including my husband) said "Are you out of your mind?"

It was physically taxing but I was able to do it.  Working that job involved a LOT of standing around.  My buddy D was in the next stand over and we rode over together and generally had each other's back.  Staffing was sometimes hit or miss; our supervisor never knew how many people he would have.  Even getting a supervisor was disorganized.  I had met D at the orientation.  When we reported to the first game meeting in the basketball arena, having no idea what we were supposed to do, the instructions were to sit with your supervisor.  But we had no supervisor.  We wandered around being completely confused until we ran into Mike who said, "You guys don't have a supervisor?  I'll take you."

But I decided to quit while I was ahead.  Nothing bad had happened in my section and I wanted to keep it that way.  I froze or I roasted.  I rarely got a break.  I did get to see most of the games.  I learned to operate out of my pockets as there was no place to put anything.  I reported to work with my car key, my phone, my pain pills, a sandwich and some money.  That's it.

Months ago, I emailed D; was he going back?  They had sent out notices saying to notify them if you wanted to return.  There was a year's hiatus when the UW football team played at Seahawks Stadium (they had their own staff) while the stadium was rebuilt.  D replied that, yes, he was going to go back because he wanted to see the new stadium for free.

So then last week, I emailed him again.  How was it going?  To my shock, he wrote that they had decided not to rehire him and never responded to his emails or calls?  What?  What?  They liked D, he got some choice jobs and he went out of his way to help Mike.  And then didn't hire him back???  He was pretty ticked.  I had just assumed he was down there.  They probably wouldn't have hired me back and then I would have felt very humiliated.
