Photoessay #2438 - Court Support

Went downtown to do some court support (sneaky style).  Parent of 18 year old charged with a misdemeanor concealed weapons charge.  The team pleads with them to let the son handle it himself.  They do but they are very concerned.  I say that I will go down to court and report back.

This is an 'intake hearing' same as an arraignment as far as I can tell.

Of course, this always gets more complicated, why is there always a trick?  In this case, there's a courtroom big double doors, etc.  But they never open and nobody goes in and out, no announcement.  Finally I realized that they call in the defendants by number they are assigned when they come in and, if they need to do the court thing, they go in through a different door.  And maybe a different exit?

Because he goes in and I never see him come out.  But he handled whatever appropriately as far as I could tell.

And there were no moms and dads hovering over their adult children.

So, recalling D1 athletic recruiting..."I lost my recruit!"  In athletic recruiting, especially in the big programs, a recruit (somebody they are considering offering a scholarship to play at their school) is handled like a delicate flower.  Nothing bad should be said or done.  You say something negative about the program to a recruit and you will hear about it big time.  That counts for parents too.

So when Susanna was on her official visit to Univ of Oregon, one of the newer kids was supposed to be hosting her.  But the coaches changed the plans but didn't let her know.  She called in a panic "I lost my recruit!  I lost my recruit!"
