Photoessay #2882 - 1971 demonstration

This picture has been knocking around my desk.  I think my friend Lynne W sent it to me.

An anti-war demonstration that I attended in 1971 in San Francisco.  I believe the occasion was the South Vietnamese premier was visiting for something.

A huge crowd.  I remember some very disturbing things from that day.  The police breaking up the demonstration, people running.  I instinctively ducked into a doorway but Dan, one of my friends, grabbed my hand yelling 'Run!'  I took his hand and ran.

We're in Union Square I think.  The bearded man in the center (John?) was an older boyfriend of my friend Donnie (maybe she has her back to the camera in front of him).  I liked and trusted him.

Hard times, though not so much for me.  I was comfortably situated at UCSC.

Last night Dennis was watching a documentary on demonstrations in Berkeley.  I asked about the 1964 Free Speech Movement.  I was in middle school when it happened but wrote about it in high school.  People's Park.  I said "I don't remember that as happy."
