For two years, I worked for the UW Athletic Department as an usher at the football games. This year, they totally rebuilt Husky Stadium and the UW football team played in the Seahawks stadium. They had their own staff so the regular UW ushers did not work.
I kind of did it just to see if I could. And I could do it physically. I remember the first game was tough because I didn't know where to go or what I would do or who was my supervisor. I wandered around with a few other newbies being completely lost. Mike picked us up and I worked on his team the whole time. We had the lower part of the upper South Stands (now torn down and rebuilt). You end up having 'your section). I had Section 52 way on the very end.
Which gave me a fabulous view of lake and the mountains. Plus overlooked the section where the players entered and the band played before the game.
I usually go two responses when people heard about my job.
a. What fun! How'd you get to do that?
or
b. Are you out of your mind? (my husband's view)
So I got this card asking if I was interested in returning. Customer Service Team or Game Day Staff, you pick, Most of the staff had been doing it for years, older than me (and I'm no spring chicken). But I'm wondering if a lot of them won't return.
Mostly this job involved a lot of standing by yourself. Sometimes I got to chat with David in the next section. It's a lot of standing. You have to be there 3.5 hours before the game. There was a meeting for quite a while in Hec Ed (the basketball venue next door). You sat with your team, found out what was going on that day. I think my picture we took the last game is still on my Facebook page. You had to be in your section prior to the games opening (2 hours before the game). Mostly you greeted the fans and said "that way up the stairs." You were supposed to go up and down your section at least once/quarter which was not easy for me. The first game, I worked a different section and I marvel at the dozens of fans that I sent the wrong way.
Fortunately for me, nothing horrible happened in my section during my two seasons. I'm thinking 'quit while you're ahead'. I found during my second season that the 'mom dirty look' could take care of a lot of situations. Some people were doing some crazy thing, I would turn and glare 'the mom dirty look' and they would quit it..
I declared "No falling down the stairs in my section, got it?"
My favorite part was the Band, I really enjoyed them especially the little concert they played after the game. They would march on the field, the cheerleaders, everybody and perform all of their numbers to the emptying out stadium. Sometimes they would get silly; the clarinets would take off down the field in the middle of a song. One time, the Oregon State band was there and they played with each other, the bands would exchange players or play together.
I got to see the football games, they provided parking and I got paid about $9/hour.
But it's so much standing, really I haven't missed it a bit.
So I'm thinking no....but I'm not sure. I could be convinced.
