I always love views from windows and landscapes. I admit being sensorily overwhelmed on that trip to New York. So I didn't take as many pictures. And, also, when you hang out with Flash, well things move fast. She lives in Manhattan, with the whole bustling, center of the universe sense of it all.
I hadn't seen my cousin in many years though we've talked, maybe some email. I've followed her art and career. Even 40 years ago, I wondered how could somebody be so talented, funny, beautiful, resourceful and nice all at once. She still is! I'm a fan!
She's always incorporated her family into her art and I knew hosting these 8 relatives for the day was really her pleasure. I think one reason my husband came on the trip was that he wanted to meet this person he's been hearing about (at least in the 36 years he's been married to me)
She talked about performing as part of Moth. Here's a video of her performing live
A story from Flash about her father
What struck me was her declaration of one principle which has inspired her art:
How do we know the things we know when we haven't been told
This question resonates with me. Because often that's part of what I'm after. What is it in our every day lives that has inherent value and interest even though we may not recognize it. And, as I wrote yesterday, what things in our own past or our ancestors past speak to us? How can we see the signs or understand the messages all around us?
Did Maier Zunder keep this notebook so I could find it?
Why did my father die on my birthday?
Actually, I have solved that last question through hypnotherapy. There's no reason why he died on my birthday, it just happened that way.
Sometimes the message is not there. But sometimes that message IS there, just waiting for us to discover it.
I do not pretend to a brilliant artist like my cousin. I toil away thinking, thinking, writing. And grateful for the opportunity to do so.
