Yesterday afternoon, I had the opportunity to attend a performance by the Seattle Symphony Orchestra. I enjoyed more than I thought it would. A friend from parent group invited me to go with her. They played Night on Bald Mountain, a Tchaikosky Rococo variations and Sibelius Symphony #1. All lively impressive pieces. I can't really comment much as I don't know that much about classical music (despite my parent's best efforts). I had been in Benaroya Hall last spring when I went the the T's to a Youth Symphony Orchestra concert and we got to sit it one of those cool boxes.
Thomas Søndergård conducted; he was so fun to watch, like a dancer.
Sometime in the past, I went to an orchestra concert with some people who were really unfamiliar with the form. I realized that I had been enough to know how it works, how the first violinist comes out and you applaud and they tune the orchestra. And then the conductor comes out and you applaud. Just the ritual.
My parents took me to the Sacramento Symphony Orchestra. I had to get all dressed up and wear white gloves. I hated it. I would sit still but my younger brother, no way. They wisely did not even attempt it. And they had given up by the time my sister came along. I think my brother is the one who no appreciates it the most. My parents continued to attend the Rockford symphony.
One sign of maturity in parents of young children. We all start out thinking that we can take our small children anywhere with us. That might would for awhile. But I know the uncomprehending shocked look that a parent gets when somebody suggests that they take a particular child to an event or long ride or something else. Translated as "You are completely out of your mind, there is NO WAY." Susanna led the way on that one, you couldn't take her anywhere. We got thrown out of events, just the way it was.
Anyway, a fun time, I enjoyed myself a lot. Thanks Wende!
