Photoessay #1955 - Microfilm Reader
A dying breed.
A lot of my research for my Maier Zunder is from newspaper articles. But I'm greedy. I have a lot of New Haven Register and I made copies from scrapbook of articles I found in New Haven.
The Register articles on the online site really only start in Oct 1878 and I want before that.
I have received two reels of the New Haven Union through Interlibrary Loan. Finding a reader is not so easy. They do have them down at Suzallo at UW. And one (though when I went there, nobody really knew how to use it) at UW Bothell. Apparently, the only one around in a public library is at Bothell. I went over on Friday and read through 1877, just the Sunday edition and it went well, I found some things (bring dimes). I returned today and only lasted an hour. For some reason, they only have Thursdays beginning in 1878. The Union defintely had an agenda having to do with currency, greenback, silver, etc. They write about it a lot. I looked through two months of Thursdays today but the print was light and I struggled to read it. I just had had it after that time. And I didn't find much either.
One library person told me that these machines are getting hard to find and when they break, it's hard to get parts. But the one in Bothell seemed to work well.
