Photoessay #1952 - Grand * daughters
I just heard that the New Haven Union reels are available at ILL. Wow, so now it starts, my dedication towards even more newspaper articles. Today, I've barely gotten started. I started a to do list; I had nine things on it, eight of them have to do with writing and now at 4:15pm I've barely started on the first one.
However I did visit with my friend Lee and I talked a long time with two new parents at Changes. And though Teddy enjoyed Lee's visit, we didn't go on a walk on this borderline day.
Lee let me talk about Maier Zunder so I did. Class is tonight...
So let's start with the is 1953 shot. I'm born in 1952 and this picture is taken in Connecticutt, definitely looks like summer time.
So we are in Maier Zunder's world, this is his grandaughter Regina, his great grandaughter Claire and great great granddaughter me 52 years after his death.
And there shall be pictures taken 52 years after our own deaths.
My grandmother Regina was born into a reasonably wealthy New Haven Jewish family and she married a man from another reasonably wealthy New Haven Jewish family. But by the 1930s, that family was thrown into pretty severe poverty, all the money gone. My grandmother had to work at a dry goods store and scrimp on every penny. My parents helped support them.
But they persevered so here's a picture of Maier's granddaughter with her own grown daughter and me. My slim mother looks delighted with me. She likely had a cigarette in the other hand. Maybe my grandfather is taking this picture. I'm all dressed up in a baby sundress.
Love my mom's shoes.
Life went one even with pretty severe challenges. They all made it through.
