Danny wrote a column for the magazine "WACAP Today" put out by the adoption agency that we used when we were adopting 27 years ago. I worked there for awhile myself.
Danny cares very deeply about issues in his life and he likes to give back to organizations involved in his life sometimes in surprising ways. He writes and speaks very articulately (he always has) and contributes by speaking at parent group (the families love hearing him speak), on adoption panels as an adult adoptee and for a YMCA program for first time juvenile offenders.
His theme is often gratitude for the blessings in his life. Of which I am also grateful and proud of his accomplishments.
His article concludes "There are so many children out there who need love. We didn't choose our prior circumstances. A loving home and a strong family system can execute awesome things."
My reaction as an adoptive parent is to wish that parenting by adoption was so simple. Many of us are faced with extremely difficult parenting situations that people outside can't even imagine. Not really my situation, especially now, but many children placed transculturally present enormous challenges.
But naches to me for having such a wonderful son who can write such a heartfelt column and can so eloquently appreciate his family. Few of us can receive such a gift.
I'm so proud of my son Danny Barnes!
