Photoessay #1454 - Burning

Last night, Dennis and I attended a ritual burning. My friend (stoking the fire) had an inappropriate legal document that upset her very much but was not going to affect anything in the future. In fact, I had been physically holding it in my house for several months. Dennis suggested "Burn it!". She started exploring the idea and decided that a ritual burning was just the thing. So Karen and Fred graciously agreed to host it at their fire pit in their backyard. I divided up the document and gave all 10 attendees a few pages to throw in the fire. We even burned the envelope! We also added other documents that we wanted out of our lives as well as ideas written on scraps of paper. Then we wrote on things we wanted to work on in the next year and put those in the fire. Confidentially, of course.

Look at the smile on her face as she stirs the fire. It's gone!!!! Afterward, we enjoyed a potluck dinner and when it got darker, we made s'mores with marshmallows, chocolate bars and graham crackers around the fire. I brought the s'more fixings and made sure to leave the leftovers there.

Everybody had such a great time. We want to do it again; everybody's got some papers in mind they have that they'd like to burn.

Seattle in July. Of course, it's cold and wet and we're all wearing coats and sweatshirts.
