OK, listen up. We've got a new softball team here. The University of Puget Sound Loggers. UPS, located on an attractive campus in Tacoma is a private liberal arts school with an enrollment of approx 3K. NCAA DIII, $33K just tuition!
The new assistant softball coach is ... Susanna! Now, I made it my small step at parent group last night to NOT mention to Susanna any more that UPS is in Tacoma (probably 40 miles from where she lives, maybe farther).
Susanna now participates in several weeks of fall practice, no games. They compete in the DIII Northwest Conference (includes Willamette, Whitworth, Whitman, Lewis & Ckark, Linfield, George Fox, etc.
She likes it, the JV coaching job at Shorecrest made her realize that she might like to coach at a higher level. So we'll go see some games this spring.
"What are they called?" Dennis asks
"The Loggers" I reply.
"Loggers?" a bit of incredulity
"Yup"
"Loggers, it is!" he says happily "can we get a t-shrt?"
In related issues, I have the 2005,6,7 UO softball highlights on a CD. The 2004 highlights were on a video tape. The 2006 highlights feature a "Suzie Play". Those infield plays that only Suzie could make. If you've seen one, you would know. I know her fans would just shrug and say "Yup, a Suzie play, we see them all the time". I have one on the highlights video, just a few seconds long. Clearly a runner on first and one out. Batter hits it hard through the infield. Suzie leaps, snags the ball and immediately guns the ball to first to double up the stunned runner.
I wish I could figure out how to capture it as a few seconds of video or as a still to put it on the blog but I don't know how.
