Tolliver Temple

Yesterday Dennis and I along with our friend Nancy B went to a Jewish Historical Society event outside this church.  This church, originally was the home of Sephardic Bikur Cholim, an orthodox synagogue serving part of Seattle's large Sephardic community.  Most American Jews are Ashkenazi (like myself) descended from Jews from Central and Eastern Europe.  A much smaller group originally were in Spain, were expelled in 1492 and migrated to Turkey and Rhodes.  They speak Ladino or Judeo Spanish.  Seattle has one of the largest Sephardic populations in the country including two good sized congregations.

I think this building dates from 1920 or before.  There are Jewish symbols all through the outside architecture including the ten commandments above the door and many mogen davids.  The building is now a Christian church.

The event was hosted by the Black Heritage Society and the Jewish Historical Society and featured separate walking tours through the neighborhood.
