Photoessay #2865 - Mental Defective

Another word post.

I'm shocked that this derogatory term is still around.  Seems like it would have been killed mercifully in the interests of political correctness.

As gun control is now in the news, somebody from the a state agency in Calilfornia was commenting on data management issues regarding background checks for the purchase of firearms.

"Let's say a mental defective moves from another state," he started.

A WHAT?  I couldn't quite believe what I was hearing.

Sure enough, googling around, I found that this term is used in regards to firearms

A person is “adjudicated as a mental defective” if any lawful authority finds that “a person, as a result of subnormal intelligence, or mental illness or incompetency, condition or disease: (1) is a danger to himself or others or (2) lacks the mental capacity to contract or order his own affairs.” Also included are those who have been found to be insane by a criminal court, incompetent to stand trial or declared not-guilty be reason of insanity.
If you are declared a mental defective, then you can't buy a gun ... or similar.

Um, should we all be tested against this?  What's a lawful authority who should be determing this?  If we're all considered mental defectives, then nobody could buy guns.  I don't think much of my second amendment rights.  I'll take the remote chance that a government militua will storm my house and I'll have to mow them down with my semi-automatic gun over the jillions of people who have these weapons to kill first graders or their local domestic rival.

Maybe there's an advantage to be declared a mental defective?

Picture of Ed Wynn, from a movie. I don't know the context but this guy might qualoify
