Photoessay #1983 - Middle vs United Front
Today at a team meeting, we spent almost the whole time discussing whether a parent should try to get herself out of the middle between her child and her husband... or ... was it more important to put the united front?
The topic (unimportant) concerned a nose ring.
The dad insisted that he strongly opposed the ring, the mom didn't feel strongly about it. The 16 year old had recently returned from treatment and doing very well.
Back and forth, the debate went. The consensus emerged that the united front was the most important. The mom has been in the middle for years; a bit longer won't make that much difference. The parents want to send a strong message that the parents will work together and won't be split. That's easier for a struggling teen when they really are working to craft a life without substance abuse. Split parents can be exploited, the easiest thing in the world. But if your parents put up a strong front, you know you can count on them.
Okay, these are young otters used without permission from the zooborns website. But they could be parents working together.
