Photoessay #1433 - Headwaters of the Sacramento

This vacation (just two days old) has had a lot of entertainment. Yesterday we had the iris and the goslings (you haven't seen them yet). Today we found two letterboxes in a old but poorly maintained IOOF/Masonic cemetery in Grant's Pass, looked for another in a nicer old cemetery in Weed.

We stopped in Mt. Shasta for a variety of things but first to search for another letterbox in a city park. Jackpot! One of the nicest spots, I've seen. The headwaters of the Sacramento River, didn't even know that was there. And living in the Sacramento Valley for so long, that river (along with the American) had long been part of my live. A beautiful spring gurgling out of the mountain. First thing you notice (other than the beautiful landscape) is that there are quite a few people coming and putting this water in containers large and small. A constant stream. Chatting with a lady standing there, I learn that this is delicious pure water and that people come from miles around. Dennis goes back and gets a few glasses and a water bottle and we dip into the springs ourselves. The water is crystal clear with a blue-grey light to it. And it does taste wonderful!

But the actual headwaters of that important river? Plus it sounds cool.

We then found an italian restaurant in Mt. Shasta and drove up Mt. Shasta, then drove to Chico, staying in a B&B and looked around town. Amazing what we dredged out of our memories (we lived here 1977-9) and how much didn't look familiar to us at all.

I will likely to be able to update for a number of days as there's no internet nor cell phone where we are going next.

Picture shows Dennis dipping his cup into the Headwaters of the Sacramento River.
