Photoessay #1261 - The Bechdel Test

The Bechdel Test for gender bias for films is based on a 1985 strip (Dykes to Watch Out For) by Alison Bechdel (reproduced for this entry). To me, it describes what I have seen in films but couldn't quite put my finger on.

Here's the test

a. Are there two women characters with names?
b. Do they talk to each other?
c. About something other than men?

Seems simple and not much to ask but surprising how many films fail the test.

I don't watch many movies but Dennis does. What movies have you seen that have passed the test or not.

For example:
Social Network
Sherlock Holmes
Taking of Pelham 123
Green Hornet
The Lincoln Lawyer

Doesn't seem that most women characters are sex objects, bitches, controlling mothers. We don't see it because we are so used to it. Often we don't even recognize our own oppression.

This test was devised 26 years ago!!

And why, in every single tv show, do the women wear deep scoop necked tops?

I'm going to keep thinking of this one.
