Mudang - Korean Shamanism

Whew....too much.  Today in my UW death class we watched a 110 minute film about Shamans in Korea in contemporary times.   These Shamans, mostly women, either are part of a hereditary shaman family or are independently possessed by the spirits.  Often they are called upon to resolve the spirits of the dead, to be part of funerary rituals.  They offer glimpses into the nether worlds of the departed.  Maybe a particular spirit has entered them, maybe a bereaved client who needs to work out the journey of a loved one.

Some of it showed rural Korean commnities; farming and fishing...and elderly shamans gossiping.  But much was long authentic takes of the shamans being possessed.

I felt so drained at the end...just too much craziness and intense ritual.  Or maybe I just needed some pain relief???

One of the main shamans at the funerary rites of her shaman sister.
