I think this set of interesting demographic graphs came from the New York Times. Showed up on Facebook.
I'm a sucker for
a. graphic representations
b. demographics
c. local information
So I like this a lot.
I'm not sure about the data source for this information. How did they know with any certainty the birthplace of the state populations? I'll just assume that it's correct.
Looking at my state, Washington. Though I'm always a California girl at heart... 47% of people in 2012 were born in Washington. Interesting that a higher percentage (55%) in California were born there. The days of my childhood, when all of the parents were from somewhere else have passed. The percentage (8%) of those who were born in California has remained constant since I (born in California) came to Washington in 1979.
Consider 1990, when my own family formation was completed.
One parent born in Washington
One parent born in California
Two children born in Washington
Two children born outside the United States
The only major change is that the number of those born outside the US has risen since that time.
Looking at the three current partners of my children:
1 born outside of the United States. Interesting, though not surprising that one of my children born outside of the US (Korea) married another immigrant (Philippines)
1 born in Colorado
1 born in North Carolina
My mother born in Connecticut, her children were born in California, their grandchildren born in Washington, Korea, Illinois
My mother's sister, also born in Connecticut, her two children also born in Connecticut and her grandchildren all born in Connecticut
If you leave, maybe your descendants are more likely to live in other places?
Here's another research question... talking with my information literate college faculty daughter...
Is is harder for unemployed young people (say age 23-28) than for unemployed older people (60-65) to find a job with a living wage.
I say it's harder for older people, she says it's harder for younger people.
