Photoessay #1513 - That 1971 Peace March
I'm having one of those 'have no idea what to write about days'. The cure for that is to rummage around in that eclectic hodgepodge of photographs I always have on my desk.
Ah, let's do more of those 1971 pictures sent to me by Lynne W. I featured one shot in July of me participating in a peace march in San Francisco in the spring of 1972. Was Lynne taking the pictures? I have very few pictures from this period in my life. Too bad because they're a scream. Did we know that at the time? That we would be chortling 40 years later? Probably not....
The first shot gives you an idea of the crowd. Who was sitting high to get this shot? I think a visit from a South Vietnamese dignitary triggered the demonstration. The only person I recognize is the bearded man in the center foreground, the older boyfriend of my friend Donnie. I remember liking him though I don't remember his name. Yes, yes I do, John!
As I wrote before, it turned into a violent day for me. I wrote about running from the police who tried to break up the demonstration. Then, in Chinatown, a short while later, a man decided to jump out of an upper story window landing right on the sidewalk right in front of me. Bad business.
Second picture is me likely earlier that same day.
As my son says, back in the day....
