Photoessay #1139 - Volcanos and lava

We visited Volcano National Park on the windward side of the Island, Kiluea being the active volcano. The volcano erupts continuously but not every day. We intended to take a boat ride featuring the dramatic drops of lava into the sea. But this particular lava event stopped 5 days ago. So no lava flowing into the sea and no $165 boat ride. Too bad. But plenty, PLENTY of lava. We drove down the Chain of Craters Highway all the way until the end. At any particular time, the park folks close down parts of the park for safety issues. Our guidebook suggests that you honor this. We experienced some pretty intense Sulphur oxide today. At one point, it started to really bother Charlie. And drove to the part of the road blocked off because of recent lava flows.

All in all, lots and lots of lava. Well, what did you think. That's what volcanos make...lava. And, to Charlie's surprise, craters are big holes in the ground. Lava, lava, lava. On this side of the island and the other.

Tropical rain forest is also involved along with lots of volcanic destruction. We took a short walk through the dense forest and through a lava tube. Real great bird action. Charlie really wants to listen...

PS we are continuing our program of camera destruction. Pam took a tumble on some lava (what else?) and her camera took a shot

Tell Pam that she pick a perfect time to leave Lafayette--snow and very cold weather ever since her departure. Cats are okay, though.
