Photoessay #1137 - Waipi'o Valley

Today my sibs really wanted to get out of the lava. They wanted tropical jungle and greenery.

So after quite a long time poring over the guidebook and getting pretty confused, we decide to go to the Waipi'o Valley on the north side of Hawaii. Not to be missed plus they had some wagon rides. The road down into the lush valley is so steep that you \MUST have 4 wheel drive to enter. People have lived there for a long time.

We first stop at Honuka'a a sleepy town and have a lovely lunch at an open air sort of place, wonderful sandwich and fruit juice prepared at a pace which, well, it put us in Hawaii time. Which means maybe later, no hurry.

Then onto the valley and you get the 4 wheel drive part. Plus the valley is bound by these huge cliffs that go straight out to the sea. We try to find the wagons place but we hadn't made a reservation and the place is very very quiet so we sat for an hour in the middle of luxuriant green nowhere. Finally found out the guy had already hitched the mules. We go down the road to another tour place which, for a pretty high price will take you on a tour down in the valley. Young man did an excellent job and we were his only passengers.

On the way back to Kailua, we stopped at Costco and did most of our macadamia nut/hawaiian shirt gift shopping and bought some shrimp and caesar salad to take home for dinner.

Picture shows view from the top of the entrance to the valley looking at the cliffs. The hazy part to the right are the mountains on Maui
