Photoessay #1115 - Reading Choices

OK, this is a brag post about my 10 year old granddaughter Melina. She spent most of the day with us today and I didn't take a single picture. We did many of our usual things including

a. replacing our letterbox in Farrell McWherter park. It's disappeared again, we put a new one higher up in a tree. Melina carved the jack o'lantern stamp last time she was here. Also enjoyed the farm animals but Teddy was not at all sure about those goats and cows.
b. Found a new letterbox at Ingraham High School. Made a crucial discovery in the nick of time that it was NOT at Inglemoor High School. That would have been much harder
c. Melina played fetch with Teddy a lot. We also looked at the Abraham Lincoln letter. Melina was not sure she had ever heard about Abraham Lincoln.
d. Melina and I took Teddy to the dog park. Teddy only wanted to play more fetch. He's a pretty good sales guy. He'll get a ball, drop it at somebody's feet, give the ball a little nudge, look up with the googly eyes, repeat until his victim throws the ball for him.
e. Came home and Dennis and Melina played more fetch with Teddy and filled up all the bird and squirrel food holders. We then watched birds and squirrels.

Then, we went down to Third Place Books. For her birthday, I said that she could go down to the bookstore and pick out a book. We cruise into the children's books. Big tables of fiction books and they are ALL fantasy. How about non-fiction, asks Melina. We look at those shelves.
"I want to read about people who really lived" she declared.
What you need is Biography, I said.

We went to the biography section and sat on the floor and looked over the books.

These are the biographies she picked out to read:

Abraham Lincoln
Martin Luther King Jr
Pocahantas

I am NOT making this up, she picked those out. She was surprised that Pocahantas was more than a movie character. "I want to get somewhere so I can start reading these books" she said softly.

Pretty sweet!
