Think of it as a short vacation, not a delay. Apparently this is the largest freshman group of the summer. 330 kids and lots of parents. They've split the group into two, one has closing at 1, the other at 3 (that's us). Saw Naomi at lunch and she had not registered for classes yet but had seen the academic advisor. Their orientation guide dragged them off somewhere, who knows where?
So I intend to look at this two hour break as a gift. I have a quiet dorm room. It's not so hot, I have this cool new fan. A good ethernet connection. How about a little peace and quiet? Before the 5 hour drive across the state? Route 26, very rural, pretty kind of but really hardly any civilization. The librarian on the tour this morning was giving us the scoop on the best restrooms on Route 26 ( and there aren't that many to begin with) Route 26 runs between Colfax and Vantage, and if you know Washington State, you know there's not much there except some irrigated agricultural land.
Yes, I will have to drag all of my stuff down to the car but, hey, I was pleasantly surprised when I got a really good parking spot right by the door of the dorm when we returned from our late night Moscow Idaho Walmart run.
I probably should go take some pictures, yes? I will have to walk up that hill to the student union building one more time.
So this 3 day orientation has been good in it's long drawnout way. So, I hope I can buy Naomi a sweatshirt, get everything to the car without incident and make it home across the state.
All of the parents have been really friendly. Warm and willing to hang out together. The popular culture is that the WSU people are real and friendly and the UW folks are arrogant and 'stuck-up'. In a way, it's played out this way for these 3 days. Most parents are from the 'west side' (an idiom that's only used here) but people have been willing to share and get to know each other.
A nap, that's really what's needed.

Don't tell Margaret but I've also been to the Walmart in Moscow.
