Photoessay #712 - SIFF

Seattle International Film Festival

A large film festival right here in town. We had never gone. But Dennis has become more interested in film this last year (he's pounding that Netflix subscription like CRAZY).

So for his birthday (what do you give a 56 year old guy you've been married to for 32 years?) I bought him two 'six pack' tickets to SIFF movies. So two people can go to six movies. I though maybe he would take Ilana or Naomi to a few of the movies. But, apparently I draw the duty.

It's hard to actually go to them. Especially if you are not used to going downtown in the evening. As in actually do it.

But last weekend, we saw three films

With a Little Help (from myself)- a French but really African film about a harried but lovable mother

The Firm Land - This one was classified as Iranian but was really an Indian film in Hindi from a director in France who was Iranian and maybe got some money from there. A quest film. The director spoke afterwards partially in French, partially in English and if you weren't confused before, you were now. But the most important idea was that he felt that the activity in the film did not have to be resolved. Plenty of room for ambiguity. And there was

Like Dandelion Dust - a conventional indie film about adoption. Mixed reviews from this family who have a LOT of adoption experiences. Did the adoptive family really have to have a big BOAT? And an oceanside home? Did the adoptive mom really have to make a speech saying that her biggest fear was that her son would say "Why aren't you my real mom" but he didn't so she was so relieved. But, lady, that kid is only six years old. You've got a LONG LONG way ahead of you on this issue. The author, director and producers were there. This film needed ambiguity and it did contain some, we grudgingly admit. Author has 3 genetic kids and 3 boys from Haiti aged about 13. Lady, check in with me in another five years and we'll see.
