The Emeralds Rec soccer team a few years ago playing on a very very wet afternoon at Shoreview Park near Richmond Beach. Pouring rain. Field a sandy muddy mess with several inches of standing rain. One of those great Seattle games where you skim the soccer ball across surface of the puddle. Splashing and sloshing become important factors. Pretty soon you don't feel wet because all of you is soaked. Swimming skills sometimes needed. At the end of the game the team poses; mostly they are having a blast. Enjoying a rainy time together.
Damp parents too. Make that soaked.
Whoever thought white soccer socks were a good idea?
Naomi the goalkeeper in the mud.
Did the Emeralds win the game? I'm sure they didn't. One of those teams that love to play but getting the ball in the opposing goal didn't happen very much. They played at the lowest rec level and maybe they won one game. Sometime, one of those years. They did win a game in the city tournament and people all around Shoreline mentioned it to me the next day.
Who the heck cares, you can see that these young people are getting a lot out of being together as a team on a very rainy afternoon. a lot of mud involved too.
We participated with Naomi's soccer team...and then to Pac 10 softball (strongest collegiate conference in the country)
It's all good. In fact, I would make a case that a team like the Emeralds has more personal impact than those NCAA Div 1 teams.
