Photoessay #449 - Zunder School

A 1905 picture postcard of Zunder School in New Haven Connecticut. Names for my great great grandfather Maier Zunder who served on the school board. He was a pillar of the New Haven Jewish Commnunity and was a successful merchant. When I went to visit in 1974, I worked with a member of Jewish Historical Society who had a full length portrait of Maier Zunder. He let me see some family scrapbooks but he physically was right at my side just in case I tried to grab something.

More information on Maier Zunder:

with another picture of the school.

The school has since been torn down for 'redevelopment'. I think my cousin might have one of the bricks. I especially like the horse drawn buggy in front.

Love this post. Your family history segments are always so interesting. The photos are great, and I'd think they might have offered you a piece of your family history rather than guarding it!

I REMEMBER THE Zunder school. it was closed not in use. We played around the back yard , even wondered inside a bit from time to time.. I recall there was a shooting in downtown N.H AND WHAT I was told by kids that lived nearby the police went into the school to get the Shotter. Now this was early 1950,s DOES anyone recall this. Donot know much about computers hope my message goes through. billgreenwood2@yahoo.com

Thank you William for your comment. I don't know when it was closed, I should find out. I think it was empty for a long time. I don't know if the Board of Education ever used it for anything else. I know it meant a lot to Mr. Zunder, he bought artwork to hang in every classroom.
