Photoessay #412 - Hiron's

My friend Emily was asking of some fun things to do in Eugene and soon I thought of Hiron's, a store with two locations in Eugene. I first walked into Hiron's on Susanna's recruiting visit. She wanted some Tylenol and this looked like a drug store, maybe like Rite Aid

It wasn't. Indeed you could buy Tylenol there. If you could find it. And so much more.

The store is stuffed with lots and lots of...all kinds of colorful decorative, old, funky, unlikely, items. Only the initiated would find anything in the cluttered crowded aisles. Banners, chandeliers, beads, posters hanging from the ceiling. Tschotkes, tea cups, figurines in the windows, all kinds of shelving filled with artsy, fuzzy, shiny, busy items. Mixed in with the regular drug store stuff.

I bought plenty of things during by six years of going to Eugene. Funky UO stuff. for example if you wanted a UO hairbrush.... Best selection of Euphoria chocolate. Good place to stock up for a tailgate party. Many colors of stamp pads. Dennis had to restrain me from purchasing a huge role of purple teddy pair wrapping paper. This roll would have had enough wrapping paper for the rest of my life. And my children's. And my children's children's. That much purple teddy bear paper.

One time when my whole family went to Eugene, Dennis with Ilana and Naomi had gone into Hiron's. They didn't come out for a long time. My brother and I considered. Finally I said (in the manner of entering a battlefield)
"OK, I'm going in"
My brother replied "OK, be safe"
I disappeared into Hiron's, reappeared later sans husband and daughters. However I did have seven chocolate bunnies.

Ilana (currently in Rome) intones "You can't explain Hiron's, you just have to experience it.
