Photoessay #97 – Whitman Mission and Columbia Gorge

We left Dayton on our way to Hood River, OR. Historical districts, yes! That’s how we came upon the Whitman Mission. Ilana had written a paper about the journals of Narcissa Whitman so she was eager to stop. Nothing left of the Mission but a large patch of grass with the outlines of the building. The Cayeuse Indians had attacked the mission and killed the Whitmans near the beginning of the Westward migration. Also spent quite a bit of time at the Fort Dalles museum. Then a beautiful drive out of the dreary desert hills of the Columbia to the more familiar green forest. The Columbia is right outside our balcony, a world-famous place for windsurfing. Very beautiful
