Photoessay #96 - Bears and small towns

Today we went on the tour of Washington State University, usual long walk but appreciated Pullman as an attractive rural college town. Among acres of wheat of the Palouse. But we had gone through the regular tour (our family had our own tour guide, had the ice cream at Ferdinands (excellent, made right there at the creamery) bought the can of Cougar Gold cheese. Actually I had never heard of it but it’s supposed to be famous. Now what, now what. Look on the brochure, they had a special facility for studying Grizzly bears and bighorn sheep. So off to see them.

I don’t have any idea why those bears are there or the politics of catching them or studying them. But there in the Palouse was a big mother bear and two partially grown cubs. I'm sure they can't figure out why they are there either. The cubs came over to investigate us but galloped back after their mother when she went back into the enclosure. The cubs managed to get over the edge of a big metal tub of water to have a bear dip, splashing and cuffing and chewing each other. The mama bear got in and that was one crowded metal tub of water. We enjoyed watching them prance around their field, jump into their tub and splash.

Later we drove to the small town of Dayton where we stayed in a cottage of a local family.

I semed to remmember a story about you visiting a zoo with the Girl Scouts. Mom was one of the leaders and when they got to a check point or maybe the bus the only girl missing was you. She found you watching the bears!
