Photoessay #60 - Dennis
My husband Dennis taken on Saturday afternoon at Seattle Center.
Not a bad picture, in fact quite nice. Like all of us, he doesn't like having is picture taken. We look our age, we are not young. We have been married for 31 years. It is a very good marriage, I am satisfied. It felt good at the beginning, feels better now.
Hard to know what to write about such a complex relationship and important person in my life. So I will stay this time with a comment made my a rather high strung single mom whose daughter was on the same soccer team. We were chatting about parenting difficulties. We could see Dennis walking across the field on his way to the game.
"Oh, here he comes" I say
My friend watched him walk around the field. She paused and said sincerely "You chose well. You chose very well"
And it's true.

Marriage is fascinating. My hubby's and my marriage certainly deepened since having a kid. (Though one should not take that to mean, have a child to save the marriage.) I mean, we were in it for the long haul, anyway. But when you see not just the man or woman you married, but the father or mother ... I think we are more impressed and respectful of each other than ever before. Someday, when "the kids" are grown, I suppose we'll see more of the "man" and the "woman" again. (?) We're patient. There are so many phases, and so much time.
Dennis is a patient devoted committed husband and father. He has always been very comfortable in this role. As our family grew in unpredictable ways, he has always welcomed each new child. He's a very present father and I appreciate that. He's done way more girl scouts, soccer, etc than I have.
We are almost at the 'kids have grown' stage. It's taken 25 years. And we will be fine.
