Photoessay #59 - Gilbert and Sullivan group
For a number of years, my husband has participated in a tradition with two of his friends of long-standing, Pat and Fred, to attend one of the summer performances of the Gilbert and Sullivan Society. That's the tradition part, every year we gotta go. They take turns between the three of them to purchase the tickets and make the arrangements, this year, it was Pat's turn. My younger daughters always want to go, they came home a few hours early from their camp jobs to attend. Some years I would disappear to a softball tournament instead.
In this photo taken yesterday afternoon, Fred, Pat and Dennis are the men in the back. Marjory, Pat's wife of just over a year is on the left, then myself, Ilana and Naomi. It looks hot in the picture but it really wasn't so bad. I'm clutching an Oregon softball hat, as usual. Naomi is annoyed because I am using her camera. The picture is taken in front of the Bagley Wright theatre on the grounds of Seattle Center. That would be Pat being silly with the fingers.
The production was "Princess Ida" which really doesn't have much to recommend itself. It was ok, had some slapstick comedy and some good costumes. As usual, it was the comedy of errors, battle between the sexes, etc. Lots of singing and dancing. Dave Ross, a local media person always plays the part for the short-statured man with the patter song. Apparently in the company that Gilbert and Sullivan, there was a short man who could sing the tougue-tying patter songs. So they always wrote a part in for him. Perfect for Dave Ross, this year he played King Gamma.
After the matinee performance, the tradition is to have supper at a local restaurant, which we did.
Seemed a little early to put up another group picture, but there it was.

sounds like a good time. I don't think Lafayette has heard of Gilbert nd Sullivan. I am sure we are not that lacking but no local productions that I can think of. So green there and so dry here.
