Photoessay #41 - Senior Day numbers

My daughter Susanna recently completed her collegiate softball career at the University of Oregon. The groundskeeper, Bill, and his staff take tremendous pride keeping the playing field in extremely good condition. I have seen him before a game take a spoonful of dirt from one part of the infield and deposit it a few feet away. It must be perfect.

A tradition on Senior Weekend (the last home games of the season) is to put the departing senior player's numbers on the field to honor them. Sometimes, the numbers are placed on the field at the player's position. This year, he put them on the sidelines and behind home plate.

Here you can see the three seniors proudly posing with their numbers. My daughter is #1 on the left with Kristi (first base #13) and Ann-Marie (designated player #22). They loved having their numbers on the field. As they say, the time goes so fast, it seems yesterday that we arrived as fans during her freshman year. I'm sad to leave my alternate life in Eugene behind.

Bill (et al) is in the background working on the pitcher's circle ready for the next day's game. This picture had to be taken after the game as this would not have been allowed during pre-game warmups. The baselines and batters box has been raked, likely they will tarp the field. Always wise in Eugene!
