Looks to me like a mushroom shaped cloud or maybe a mariachi hat. Actually it's macro photography. Where you have little pool of water and you drop a little drop of water into a small pool. And photograph the results.
Sometimes you add other materials or colors. Charl says he buys food coloring by the pint. But I can see the guys (maybe single like him) who have elaborate little booths in their bathrooms with their itty bitty drops of water.
I don't know why, seems pretty nerdy to me. Apparently there's lots of guys who do this.
