From Wikipedia
The Edmund Pettus Bridge was the site of the conflict of Bloody Sunday on March 7, 1965, when armed police attacked Civil Rights Movement demonstrators with billy clubs and tear gas as they were attempting to march to the state capital Montgomery. The marchers crossed the bridge again on March 21 and successfully walked to the Capitol building.Edmond Pettus was a Confederate general and KKK Grand Dragon. The name on the bridge endures. I think it's just that his name is now associated with important events of the 1960s Civil Right events.
Selma, iteself, as we were warned, is a poor rundown town. And it was.
But as we silently walked over the bridge, I could imagine the cops with their guns (did they have horses?) blocking the way. The marchers kneeling, there's an aura of danger all around the site.
Do not forget what happened here.
PS I saw my dr today and we declared a victory that I was able to do things on this trip such as walk over this bridge.
