Shabbat under the Pettus Bridge in Selma

We were in Selma on Saturday morning and Rabbi Ruth decided to have a short Shabbat service in this little seating area in a wooded area under the bridge.  So we did, something about that place, very peaceful needing even more peace.  We could contribute but it would never be enough.

This evening, I got a lovely note from the son of a friend of mine from college.  I had written a quite elaborate post on her young death.  10 years ago.  She had an interesting story.  She had majored in Russian at UCSC graduating in 1974.  She took a job being a nanny for a correspondent in Moscow.  She met a leading dissident there.  Much cloak and dagger.  They married and she returned to the US and he was able to come, by great fortune to the US.  I remember visiting her in Santa Cruz, pregnant with her first child.  They had 5.  He joined the Russian Orthodox clergy rising to a very high level.  They both died young; tempting to blame lots of cigarettes.  If anybody is interested I can repost it.
