Photoessay #1891 - Dick's Drive-In opens in Edmonds

Dick's Drive-in is a locally owned chain of old-style burger places in Seattle. They have garnered tremendous good-will over the years. Everybody knows that Dick's pays higher than average wage and provides medical and tuition benefits to its workers.

Everybody goes to Dick's. We got to Dick's. It truly is a drive-in, there's no inside eating area just windows in front. Very limited menu, I think there's two hamburgers (Dick's deluxe is my favorite), fries, onion rings, soda and shakes. That's it.

A number of months ago Dick's announced that it was gong to open a new location in Edmonds north of Seattle, their first new store in 37 years. Amazing buzz, everybody's so excited, it's all over facebook. Dick's is opening in Edmonds! Big news, we can hardly wait. Did you hear?

So you wonder, what other burger place is going to generate so much excitement over a new location. On their website they have 34 media references to their announcement, and that was before they decided where the new location would be.

So, on Oct 20, they open, huge crowd, the mayor's there, the local high school band marches and plays. Also the local bagpipe band. They've got a great video on their site if you have 4 minutes to invest. Huge event. And, up to a few weeks ago, every time we drove by, the lines would be long, night or day. Dennis finally walked over and had a burger this week.

Dick's has been around for a long time, a contributing fixture in the community. It's paid off for them. What a tremendous brand.
