Photoessay #1855 - Teddy's three years old!

My dog Teddy is three years old today! He's a puppy of a rescue dog. The mom was some kind of shepherd-whippet thing. Certainly a mutt, you can make up the name however you want. Dennis calls him a giraffe-hound because his neck is so long. At first glance, people are afraid "Is that a pit?" they ask cautiously. "He's not a pit," I always say defensively. Basically Teddy loves everybody and he's sure that everybody loves him. I did pick him from the litter as the most laid back. The other puppies took off chasing the birds but Teddy just liked watching them. Very submissive, everybody's the boss of him, especially the cats. He's known as a sweet boy or, as James says, a sensitive boy because he's so cautious about everything. He's not about to cross that vacuum cleaner cord or that toolbox.

Dennis described Teddy's activities very well the other day. He follows me around everywhere. I talk to him and he listens.

Teddy loves to fetch; it's the reason he's on this earth other than loving everybody. Chasing the ball is everything to him. "See," he says, "we could play this great game. You throw the ball, I go get it and bring it back and drop it at your feet. Then you throw it again, it's great!" Many men have admired his retrieving. "How'd you teach him that? That's some quality fetching." Of course, I didn't teach him at all. When he was about a year old, the fetch portion of his brain fired up and that was that.

Watch out, he's a major league greeter. If you come over to my house, you can expect Teddy to make a really big deal about it. He's so thrilled to see you, he'll prance and fuss and wag and wiggle and moan. "You coming is the BEST thing that's happened to me ALL DAY!"

Happy birthday Teddy!
