Photoessay #1581 - The Crock
My crock from M. Zunder & Sons today. Purchased from an antique dealer in Connecticut. 'M. Zunder & Sons' on top, the "New Haven CT. With the funny little symbol at the bottom. Maier Zunder operated a very prosperous wholesale grocery. When he took the little grocery over from his late brother Samuel, he took a partner. The business was known as:
Zunder & Metzger until his partner retired then
M. Zunder & Co then
M. Zunder & Son when he included his oldest son Albert then
M. Zunder & Sons when his next youngest son Theodore joined.
Theodore was born in 1858 so this must date from the 1880s? The deal thought that it might have been used to store oil or wine. Which sounds rather biblical, doesn't it?
I put my Maier Zunder picture next to it. For right now, it lives on one of my marble topped tables in my dining room.
Last night, Dennis was figuring out ow to pay our Visa bill. It's over $3000 he says.
"How'd it get so high?" I ask.
"First, there's the $2100 you spent at the Changes auction." Actually I got over $500 back because we went in on the Board dinner with the other members of the table. Still, it is a lot.
"Oh right, yeah, hmm", I mumble. All my doing.
Then he says quietly, "I guess the rest can be charged to the Maier Zunder account
